Keliber Oy is a company engaged in exploration and in the future mining. It is owned by Finnish investment companies and Norwegian Nordic Mining ASA. Keliber Oy conducts exploration in Kaustinen and Kokkola in Central Ostrobothnia. The company is headquartered in Kaustinen. In its exploration areas, the company searches lithium. The company aims to be the first company in Europe to produce high-grade lithium carbonate out of spodumene pegmatites for the needs of lithium battery industry. According to forecasts, the global demand for lithium will triple over the next 10 years.

About exploration

The company has valid claims and exploration permits amounting to 2,496 hectares. In its exploration areas, the company searches lithium. In exploration and research, Keliber Oy use diamond drilling, geological sampling of the soil and, mini-drill sampling and geophysical measurements. In 2015, a total of 2,294 meters was drilled (diamond drilling). No permits concerning the exploration areas are subject to appeal.

• The company has done proactive measures in order to improve the quality of the territory of a golden eagle found in the area. Two new nesting platforms were built in 2014. Company commenced regular wintertime feeding of eagles already in 2014. By these measures Keliber has been able to secure the successful breeding of the golden eagle. One eagle chick was born in 2015 and in 2016.
• The company has also begun satellite monitoring of the male eagle, aiming to gather information on the territorial behaviour of the eagle.
• The company has also initiated measures to ensure a sufficient level of protection of moor frogs in the area by digging four ponds suitable for breeding and hibernation. Functionality of the ponds is actively monitored.

Vaikutukset paikallisiin elinkeinoihin: Exploration is carried out in the reindeer management area. The municipality, inhabitants of the neighbouring areas, landowners and environmental organisations are the key stakeholders of the company, and they are taken into consideration in all steps of the company’s exploration activities.
